Review: The concept of the false self often begins early in life, shaped by family expectations, peer pressure, and media influence. As children, we may learn that certain behaviors, appearances, or beliefs earn more praise and acceptance than others. Over time, we start to mold ourselves into what we think others want us to be—smiling when we’re sad, agreeing when we disagree, or hiding parts of ourselves that don’t seem “acceptable.” Social media only intensifies this problem by promoting filtered versions of people’s lives, making it even harder to distinguish between what’s real and what’s performative. As a result, many people walk through life feeling disconnected—not only from others but from themselves. This disconnection can lead to anxiety, low self-esteem, and even depression. When we suppress our true selves for too long, we begin to forget who we are underneath the mask. That’s why it’s so important to pause and reflect: Am I being true to myself, or just trying to fit in?
